SUMMARY:Washington / Cherry Pie Hikes
DESCRIPTION:These hikes are part of an event that combines the annual “Cherry Pie Hike” and “Washington’s Trail Hike.” It commemorates George Washington’s birthday and the Virginia Colony mission demanding French withdrawal from British territory that precipitated the French and Indian/Seven Years War. \nThe day-long event will begin at 9:00AM and end at 2:00PM and will include informational presentations and displays\, including reenactors with clothing and equipment of the time period. \nParticipants can choose one or more favorite hike option and enjoy a taste of cherry pie\, courtesy of North Country Brewing Company. \nChoose one of six 30-minute history hikes: 9:30AM\, 10:00AM\, 10:30AM 11:30AM\, Noon\, or 12:30PM\nThe 30-minute history hikes explain Washington’s 1753 mission and let visitors witness the musket shot that almost killed Washington at age 21. \nOr one of two 60-minute nature walks: 9:00AM & 11:00AM\nWinter Nature Walks are led by Jennings’ staff and will take you on a 60-minute stroll to see the park habitat in winter. \nOr the 7-mile-long hike: 9:00AM (NOT suited for tennis shoes)\nNorth Country Trail hike lasts from 9:00 AM until approximately 1:00 PM\, (depending on hiking speed). This long hike will cover 7 miles from the boat launch located under the Route 528 bridge in Moraine State Park to Jennings. Recommended for ages 12 and up\, the hike is rated “moderate\,” and will traverse varied terrain\, with some slopes and winter trail conditions. \nParticipants should park and meet under the 528 bridge to begin the hike. They may hike back or return via shuttle. Reservations are required for hikes and nature walks by February 19. Call 724-290-2129 if you have questions or are not able to register online. It is held in partnership with the America250 Butler Committee and Experience Butler County. \nCranberry Township will unveil and display “The Butler Bell\,” which was designed by Butler-based artist Tom Panei. It depicts an abstract depiction of Butler County\, prominently featuring the Butler County Courthouse\, a shining sun\, music notes\, and more. FirstEnergy sponsored its creation. \nThe ceremony is slated to feature the presentation of the American flag by VFW Post 879\, a performance by members of the Butler County Symphony Orchestra\, and remarks from Bruce Hezlep\, Cranberry Township Board of Supervisors Chair; Leslie Osche\, Butler County Commissioner; and Robi Lombardo\, Regional External Affairs Consultant for FirstEnergy. \nIt is one of two bells on display in Butler County\, with the other – “The Butler County Heritage Bell” by artist Paula Slomer – housed at the Butler County Courthouse. The bells will remain on display through December 2026. \nThe bells are part of America250\, a nationwide initiative commemorating and celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The goal of the effort is to inspire the community to reflect on the past and renew a commitment to the ideals of democracy through programs that educate\, engage\, and unite.

DESCRIPTION:George Washington’s Close Call: How a missed bullet in Forward Township forged America’s beginnings \nForward Township will hold an America 250 PA Celebration on May 17\, 2026\, at 2pm\, as part of the 250th anniversary celebration of our Nation’s founding. The Township celebration is a free community event (tickets required by filling out this form) that will be hosted at the beautiful Glen Eden Barn on Dufford Road. \nThe celebration will include George Washington and Christopher Gist historical reenactors who will recount events surrounding Washington’s near assassination here in the township\, in addition to French & Indian War reenactors\, a presentation of Township history\, patriotic songs and music\, educational information tables\, and refreshments. \nThis wonderful community event is a collaborative effort of Township and community area volunteers\, Township leadership\, and two Seneca Valley Senior High students – Josh Radonovich and Anita Miller. DESCRIPTION:Zelienople is honored to once again host the Traveling Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. This solemn memorial reminds us of the stark cost of freedom. Our way of life is no happy accident. It was forged\, and defended at the cost of human life. We invite you to join us for the Opening Ceremony and to honor the traveling replica of the Unknown Soldier. The Tomb will be with us for three days with the Opening Ceremony to be held on Friday July 3rd. \nYou can learn more about the Tomb of the Unknown Solider and the Memorial Amphitheater in Arlington Virginia here. \nWhat to Expect:\nJust as it was in 2022\, the Tomb will be located in Four Corners Park\, in the heart of Zelienople. The Park’s address is 124 North Main Street\, Zelienople PA 16063. You can also visit our current Veterans Memorial here in this park. The opening ceremony will be a short program filled with reverence and respect\, prayer and patriotism. Reverend Reid Moon will lead us in this ceremony\, and will be joined by Pennsylvania State Representatives\, and notable figures from our area. The ceremony is free to attend and you can find parking information here. \nThe Town of Zelienople is currently embarking on a mission to renovate this memorial. You can learn more about the project here. \nThe opening ceremony will start at 6PM and is a short dedication to honor the life size replica of the actual Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington Virginia. \n*This program is subject to change. \nZelienople would like to extend our gratitude for this second opportunity to host this monument to freedom\, for honoring our town. The patriotism\, pride\, and empathy in Zelienople is rival to none. We will be hosting a few representatives from \nWe’d like to thank Boney Joe for lending his voice talent\, Reverend Reid Moon for the Invocation and Benediction\, and Mayor Tom Oliveria for the Pledge of Allegiance. In addition\, we owe a debt of gratitude to our keynote speakers Commissioner Boozel\, State Representative Kelley\, and Dr. Shanae Clancy\, State Representative Stephanie Scialaba for the Presentation of the Flag\, and Jason Pepe and the Bantam Marines for the Presentation of the Colors and 21 Gun Salute. \nHow to Get Involved:\nWe are seeking donations to purchase flags to once again place them throughout Four Corners Park ahead of the arrival of the Tomb. To make a donation to help us purchase these flags\, please send a check to the Zelienople Historical Society marked for “America 250”.
