American Flag Retirement Ceremony
Honoring our flag. Honoring our freedom.
As we proudly celebrate America’s 250th Semiquincentennial, local non-profit organization Retire Your Old Glory Inc., in collaboration with Cranberry Township, will host a dignified and meaningful ceremony to respectfully retire thousands of unserviceable American flags.
The Retire Your Old Glory ceremony is set for 2:30 – 4:30 p.m. Sunday, June 14 – Flag Day – at Community Park. This patriotic event will bring together community members, volunteers, and supporters to respectfully retire the flags that have been collected through the Retire Your Old Glory project. The event will be open to the public and they are invited to bring their unserviceable American flags for proper retirement.
The Cranberry Township Board of Supervisors will designate an area within the park as a permanent retirement area and resting place for the ashes of retired American flags collected through the Retire Your Old Glory project.
Founded by Cranberry Township resident Denise Etter, the project is now in its 15th year and has collected more than 60,000 flags. Collection bins are available at 16 locations in Pennsylvania and Virginia, including one in the Cranberry Township Municipal Center. In accordance with United States flag code, all unserviceable American Flags should be ceremoniously retired and replaced when they are torn, tattered, or faded. Flags deposited in the Retire Your Old Glory collection bins are retired honorably during ceremonies held by Scouting America, the Girl Scouts, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and other service groups.
Volunteer and sponsorship opportunities are available for the June 14th retirement ceremony. For more information, contact Denise Etter at Denise@RetireYourOldGlory.com – 412-370-0919.
